At the age of 25, Harry Aikines-Areeytey is determined the time has come for him to fulfil the promise he showed as a teenager and claim a medal at the Commonwealth Games.

A former world youth and junior champion, the Sutton sprinter missed out on London 2012 after suffering a hamstring injury in the build-up to the Games.

But after an impressive season in which he equalled his personal best of 10.08 seconds over 100m in Hengelo at the start of June, Aikines-Aryeetey is in a bullish mood heading into Glasgow 2014.

“Preparations for the Commonwealth Games are going really well,” said Aikines-Aryeetey, who claimed victory in the B 100m race at the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games last weekend in 10.26secs.

“I’ve equalled my PB this year and I like championships, so I’m looking forward to going through the rounds and taking in the vibe.

“The stadium is a lovely place to compete and I can’t wait to go there, perform well, make the final and get a medal.

“I missed out on 2012, I tore my hamstring before the championships, but even so I hadn’t had the greatest of seasons competing individually, so to get a medal at the Commonwealth Games at what is kind of like a home Games for me would be amazing.”

Aikines-Aryeetey is part of a strong English sprint squad with Adam Gemili and Richard Kilty also contesting the 100m.

But Aikines-Aryeetey, who claimed silver at the Sainsbury’s British Championships behind Dwain Chambers, believes he is in the right shape to get on the podium.

“For me it’s just about being competitive, being in each race and doing the best I can, so I can walk away from each race and look back and said I did well,” he added.

“I want to get medals. It’s about time, I’m 25 years old and I want to be in the mix.

“I’m enjoying competing again which is nice, and moving forward it’s about realising my potential and trusting myself.”
