80 people escaped from a huge fire at a block of flats in Croydon yesterday evening (Wednesday).

Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled the blaze on Whitehorse Road in Croydon on June 7.

The fire destroyed two flats and two balconies on the first and second floors of the building.

A third-floor flat and balcony were also severely damaged.

No injuries were reported.

The fire started at around 5pm and was brought under control by 6.45pm.

More than 40 calls were received by the Brigade’s control centre.

One of the turntable ladders was utilised as a water tower to put out the fire externally.

Some nearby roads were shut few hours and locals were urged to avoid the area.

London Fire Brigade has launched an inquiry into the cause of the fire.

Station Commander Chris Young, who was at the scene, said: "Around 80 people left the building, thankfully uninjured.

"Road closures are expected to be in place for a number of hours this evening and we're urging people to avoid the local area."

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackled a flat fire on Whitehorse Road in Croydon.

“Two flats and two balconies on the first and second floors of the building were destroyed by fire. Most of a third-floor flat and balcony were also damaged by the blaze.

“There were no reports of any injuries.

“The Brigade's 999 Control Officers took over 40 calls about the fire.

“One of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders was used as a water tower to get water on to the building externally.

“The Brigade was called at 5.03pm and the fire was under control by 6.45pm. Fire crews from Croydon, Woodside, Wallington and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
