Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a woman was stabbed to death at a house in Addiscombe.

A man has been arrested after the woman, believed to be in her 20s, was found with multiple stab wounds in Meadvale Road last night.

Police and paramedics were called to the house at 8.55pm.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have not yet been informed and a post-morterm examination has not yet been held.

Detectives believe her death is linked to a second stabbing in Addiscombe last night.

A man in his 30s was found with stab wounds to his shoulder in nearby Gordon Crescent just after 10.30pm.

Police and paramedics attended and the man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in a stable condition at a south London hospital.

Terry Wiltshire, 72, who lives in Meadvale Road, said his wife had seen a pool of blood inside the house where the victim died.

He said: "There was an ambulance in the middle of the road and police cars and the blocked off both ends of the street.

"There were at least half a dozen police cars.

"About half an hour later more police turned up with two sniffer dogs and searched around the houses. They searched all the gardens and the bins.

"The front door was left open and my wife saw a really big pool of blood on the floor.

"I think we had more police here than they had at Croydon police station at one stage."

He said a couple had moved into the house in October last year and described them as quiet.

Another neighbour, who gave his name only as Barry, said: "There was a lot of police activity up and down the road.

"Forensics were going in and out of the house all night. They were still there at 3am."

Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are investigating. The probe is being led by Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Gwyn.
