Where better to put on a show that throws open the doors to health and fitness than at a health centre?

Comic fly-on-the wall promenade play Take On Me is set in a fitness environment in the 1980s and is directly inspired by stories of people who use and work in Surrey’s leisure centres.

Having begun its tour in Caterham last week, the show will be performed at Woking Leisure Centre (October 1), Dorking Leisure Centre (October 15) and Spelthorne Leisure Centre (October 29) with a ticket costing the same as an exercise class.

Audiences will be led through different areas of the centre by musicians playing new versions of 80s hits, from the pool to the gym to the changing rooms and beyond, hearing from characters striving for a better version of themselves.

Local people - including gym buffs, choirs and leisure centre staff – will perform alongside a professional cast.

The show is partly funded by the ‘Not For the Likes of Me’ commission which looks at new ways of reaching people who don’t normally engage with arts and follows theatre company Dante or Die’s shows I Do performed in hotels and Handle with Care performed at Storage Units.

Take On Me is at Woking Leisure Centre on October 1 (freedom-leisure.co.uk), Dorking Sports Centre on October 15 (placesforpeopleleisure.org) and Spelthorne Leisure Centre on October 29 (everyoneactive.com).
